About RPM
Uniquely tailored to each students motor readiness & sensory profile.
Empowering students to express, create & develop.
What is RPM?
RPM is a purposeful skill development method, using an array of alphabet letter boards to prompt a teacher-student response loop. The teacher takes into consideration all of the students' learning channels (auditory, visual, tactile and kinesthetic) in order to adapt throughout the session based on each individuals sensory profile.
HOW RPM WAS CREATED
RPM (Rapid Prompting Method) was developed by Soma Mukhopadhyay, as a result of homeschooling her autistic son and seeing incredible success in his skill development, confidence and independence from using this particular method.
WHAT MAKES RPM UNIQUE?
Soma®RPM is not just a spelling method or communication method. It is a holistic teaching method that adapts to each student's individual motor readiness and sensory profile. Communication is a byproduct of RPM, along with the development of many other purposeful skills like handwriting, typing and speech.

Who is RPM for?
The Soma®RPM Method specialises in
teaching individuals who are neurodivergent
and have limited or unreliable speech abilities.
Although our primary focus is on working with autistic students, the Soma®RPM approach is suitable for any student who lacks reliable means of communication.
“RPM finds success in teaching learners of all types, by identifying and leveraging their unique learning channels. Each lesson is carefully tailored to accommodate the individuality of the student”
– Soma®RPM
How does RPM work?
ANALYSING & ADAPTING
RPM a purposeful skill development method in which the teacher creates a "teacher-student response loop." The teacher learns how to access the open learning channels of each unique student & adapts the way the lessons are presented accordingly.
THE ‘LOOP’
The unique loop created for each individual is intended to create an alertness and improved focus in the student. The rhythm created by this multi-channel loop is aimed to overpower the student’s other engagements, such as stims, OCD, and impulses. The student begins to expect their role as they learn to associate certain expectations/behaviours with certain loops.
The Learning Channels
Creating a familiar environment
for individuals to learn appropriate
skills & increased sensory tolerance.
Auditory Tolerance
Listening to the teacher
for longer periods of time.
Visual Tolerance
Building visual tolerance by
looking at the letter board,
pictures, graphs.
Tactile Tolerance
Building the skills to hold a
pencil, point to letters on
the letterboard, typing.
Kinaesthetic Tolerance
Building the tolerance to
sit in a chair for allocated
periods of time.
